The Toyota Tundra took what seemed like an eternity to break out of the previous-generation model's 15-year-old mold. It has at long last been redesigned for 2022, arriving modernly equipped and vastly improved, with every nook and cranny new. Now that we've told you how the third generation Tundra drives, gone into depth about its powertrains, and more, we can discuss how much the latest full-size pickup from Toyota will cost when it hits dealerships.

The base Tundra SR, the cheapest model in the lineup, starts at $37,645, a full $2,175 more than last year's Tundra SR. It's a Double Cab truck (Toyota-speak for an extended cab; a crew-cab costs more) with a 6.5-foot bed powered by the standard i-Force twin-turbo 3.4-liter V-6 engine. Toyota officially calls it a 3.5-liter; technically, it displaces 3,445 cc, and thus rounds down to 3.4L.

Not only is the Tundra pricier than the old one, it's now about the same amount more than an equivalent base-model, extended-cab 2021 Ford F-150, which starts at $35,070. (Toyota doesn't make a regular-cab Tundra, so we're comparing its least-expensive extended cab option to like models from the Big Three.) The cheapest double-cab '22 Ram 1500 you can buy runs $35,770, while the least-expensive '22 Chevy Silverado equivalent runs $35,995. The Toyota's more powerful base engine largely makes up for its price premium; similarly burly engines in any of those competitors will largely even out the pricing field. But hey, a base price is a base price, and people will compare them; when they do, the Toyota will appear pricier.

Moving up a few notches, buyers who opt for a Limited in CrewMax (a four-door crew cab configuration, versus the entry-level, stubbier Double Cab extended cab setup) are looking at $50,595. If money isn't an issue and you've got to have (almost) the best that luxury has to offer, then you'll be pulling into your driveway in a fully loaded crew-cab Tundra 1794 Edition for $62,715. By comparison, the outgoing 1794 had a starting price of $53,540. The newly revealed, range-topping Capstone version—the real cowboy Cadillac—runs a hefty $75,225.

As we pointed out, the 3.4-liter twin-turbo V-6, generating 389 hp and 479 lb-ft of torque, comes standard across the range, including SR, SR5, Limited, Platinum, and 1794. The only exceptions are the off-road TRD Pro and ultra-luxurious Capstone variants, which will now rely on the new i-Force Max hybrid powertrain. Essentially a V-6 engine coupled with an electric motor, hybrid models benefit from additional power and twist, delivering a not-too-shabby 437 hp and 583 lb-ft of torque. The point, Toyota makes clear, is enhanced power, not exactly squeaky clean fuel economy.

It is worth mentioning, while the SR and SR5 don't get the hybrid option, Limited, Platinum, and 1794 trim levels do. To that end, a 10-speed automatic transmission replaced the old six-speed in the previous generation.

SR models with rear-wheel drive offer an EPA-estimated 18/24/20 mpg city/high/combined; all other rear-drive variants come rated at 18/23/20 mpg. Fuel economy for the four-wheel-drive SR and SR5 checks in at 17/23/19 mpg, whereas Limited, Platinum, and 1794 4WD models deliver 17/22/19 mpg.

The i-Force Max hybrid setup improves fuel economy, but hardly to Prius levels. In the rear-drive Limited, Platinum, and 1794 models, the hybrid delivers 20 mpg city, 24 mpg highway, and 22 mpg combined. With four-wheel drive (including in the Capstone), those figures drop to 19/22/21 mpg.

The 2022 Toyota Tundra boasts a maximum tow rating of 12,000 pounds when equipped with a gas engine; hybrids can tow up to 11,500 pounds. Maximum payload capacity has increased to 1,940 pounds. Customers who buy a Double Cab can choose between a 6.5- or 8.1-foot bed; the CrewMax is available with a 5.5-foot short bed or 6.5-foot bed.

By now, we know what you may be thinking: How much for the boss status TRD Pro? Toyota will announce pricing near the on-sale date next spring. Gas-powered Tundras begin to arrive at dealerships in December.
