Can i wear normal contact lenses with astigmatism reddit

I want to try non prescription colored contacts to wear while I wear my glasses, just for something different. However, I'm not sure if a basic colored contact lens would fit my eye correctly.

If you are looking for lenses without power then there is a good chance that your doctor can find something that you will be able to wear. Typically astigmatism wont be an issue with fitting a soft lens.

Astigmatism isn't all-or-nothing. It's measured in quarter-diopter steps. If you want a sensible answer, it's a good idea to say how much astigmatism you have. Small amounts can be negligible pertaining to contacts.

I honestly have no idea how much I have but I think my eye sight is pretty bad. I do know my eyeglasses prescription though, if that has anything to do with it?

I have astigmatism (as well as hyperopia) and have worn novelty lenses for a monochrome cosplay with no problems.

I used to wear contact lenses. My left eye is "normal", right eye has a slight astigmatism.

The first year i had contact lenses they fit perfectly and were super comfortable, right eye was a toric lens. Once those ran out and i went to get refitted they couldn't get the fit, so i stopped wearing them again.

Fast foward a year (now), i decide i wanna start wearing lenses again, i get fitted with a toric lens on the right, and it's super uncomfortable. The doc says i have a very light astigmatism in my right eye, i can get away with wearing a normal contact lens in my right eye. And she's right, its much more comfortable and only a slight reduction in visual acuity, does not bother me at all.

However, my worry, (and excuse my subpar knowledge on eyes and vision) is that the toric lenses, are designed in such a way to conform to the peculiarities of my cornea. Is a normal lens just sitting on top of the cornea not a problem in terms of ocular health?

So I’m currently trying contact lenses and apparently I have astigmatism (CYL -1.00 in both eyes) meaning that I have to use ‘toric’ contact lenses. The ones I was trying are apparently too tight so my opticians wants me to try one that’s £40 a month. Much more than I was planning to spend

However I purchased a month’s worth from daysoft for only £13 or so but they’re the standard non-toric spherical dailies that don’t take the CYL into account. I didn’t even know that I had astigmatism until I went back to the opticians so I thought I could be frugal and just order any cheap pair.

I know that my astigmatism is only ‘slight’ so could I get away with wearing these or will I have to throw them away? What would happen if I were to wear them?

I'm using monthlies, one toric (aspheric), one regular.

My plan is to switch to dailies or at least have them in my home when I'm not using monthlies. Those do not come in all spheres and are quite expensive.

So, can regular contacts instead of toric ones worsen the eyesight? Is there anything else I should be aware of?

Thanks in advance!

An optometrist can calculate a spherical equivalent for a toric lens and see if the vision is good enough for you. So they'll convert the cyl portion of your contact Rx into a higher number in the sph column.

I got mine to do this, in the end the vision was just crap without the astigmatism correction given by the toric lens. I'm one of those people that can't seem to get by without astigmatism correction, which is unfortunate because I fine toric lenses physically uncomfortable and asphere lenses super comfy. But I can't drive at night without astigmatism correction! Maybe you could get by with a spherical equivalent

Thanks. Yes, I agree. I didn't try it at night, but so far spherical (normal) lens worked on my astigmatic eye, good enough. Though I didn't spend much time to see/feel if it would be usable in the long run or not.

level 1

You can, but they'd impact the quality of your vision. It may be harder to focus on details and read.

level 1

Regular contacts won't worsen your vision Whether or not your vision will be good enough with non-toric (spherical) depends on how much astigmatism you have. Many people can get by with spherical lenses if they have a diopter or less of astig, but some find the vision too blurry. Depends on your tolerance for blur.

level 2

Thanks, that's what I thought also... it's all about the tolerance. And to be honest, I tried my spherical lens on my astigmatic eye and didn't notice much difference (in a bad way). Toric is definitely better, but maybe this would be good enough in times when I need a "quick" sight correction.

level 1

Regular contacts wouldn't address your astigmatism. It just.. wouldn't be your prescription is the thing. It's not an optional thing like getting varifocal glasses where you're just allowing only your far or near vision to he treated, it simply isn't the right prescription.

Can people with astigmatism wear normal contact lenses?

Q: Can you wear regular contact lenses if you have astigmatism? A: No, if you have astigmatism, it's essential that you wear specialized contact lenses because your condition can worsen if not. Regular contact lenses do not cover your cornea's entirety, which will impair your ability to see even further.

Can I wear astigmatism contacts without astigmatism?

Can I wear astigmatism contacts if I don't have astigmatism? We don't recommend astigmatism contact lenses if you don't have astigmatism. Toric contacts and other contact lenses for astigmatism are made to correct symptoms caused by an irregular cornea.

Can someone with astigmatism wear colored contacts?

Yes. Not only must the shape of color contacts for astigmatism be correctly shaped to refract light into your eye the right way, you likely also need some correction of your vision for distance. This can only responsibly be done by a proper optometrist.
