Gold Peak Tea is a brand of bottled tea distributed by Coca-Cola.
Listed above is the unsweetened variety which is marketed as using "high-quality tea leaves" with a "home-brewed taste".
But, why does tea need added natural flavors and caramel color? Based on the caffeine content, it seems like there isn't much actual tea in the product, which is why they need to enhance the flavor and the color of the product to make it taste and look like home-brewed tea.
This explanation was offered by one of our readers:
A possible explanation as to why this (and other) products include "natural flavor and color". This is a common practice - notably in orange juice - in order to maintain a consistent product appearance and flavor across all product runs. Due to variances in batches of tea leaves not every brewed batch would look or taste exactly the same. This exact same consumer experience however is precisely what companies are looking for. So they hire chemists to use extracts of the base product (tea in this case) and use this in each batch brewed to ensure the consistency they are looking for.
