How far back does icloud save text messages

Can't actually find a direct answer to this question. I tried searching for it, but I came up empty. Apologies in advance if it's indeed somewhere in the forum I may have missed. If so, just link me to it and I'll delete my post as to not clutter the sub, but my question is:

I have 'keep messages for 30 days' turned on Mac & iPhone. If I turn on messages in iCloud does that mean those saved messages will delete after 30 days FROM iCloud too, or will they only be deleted from iPhone & Mac after 30 days? Does iCloud keep backing up indefinitely until you run out of space or turn if off, or does it abide by the 'keep for 30 days' setting too?

  • You can back up messages on an iPhone to your iCloud account, or sync messages with your Mac.
  • When you back up your messages to iCloud, you can view them on the iCloud website.
  • When you sync iPhone messages to your Mac, you can view and send texts from your computer.

In most cases, a lost text message isn't any more than a brief annoyance. But, it can potentially have much graver consequences — a lost text exchange could mean losing an important piece of information or an irreplaceable picture.

Whether you want to preserve all your conversations, or you just want to keep a chat going smoothly once you get a new iPhone, it's a good idea to back up your messages on iPhone.

And there are two easy ways to do it using iCloud on your iPhone and Mac.

Your texts will now be backed up to iCloud. Just make sure you have sufficient cloud space, and consider buying more storage if you need it.
