We love a good morning cup of coffee as much as anyone, but sometimes all the cream, sugar, and flavor add-ins can add up to quite the decadent drink. But to help out those of us who still want to enjoy a sweet, creamy beverage in the morning, Starbucks added two all-new creamers to their grocery store lineup–the Zero Creamer–and they both boast zero grams of added sugars.

The creamers come in caramel and hazelnut flavors, inspired by their popular in-store drinks caramel macchiato and hazelnut latte, respectively. Each creamer comes in a 28 fluid ounce bottle and the suggested retail price is $5.49. You can find the new Starbucks Zero Creamers in the refrigerated dairy aisle at your local grocery stores, along with the existing creamers in the lineup like caramel, white chocolate, cinnamon, toffeenut, hazelnut mocha, and non-dairy caramel and hazelnut options.

What’s in Starbucks’ Zero Creamers?

The ingredients listed on the Zero Creamer bottles are nonfat milk, heavy cream, vegetable oil, buttermilk, salt, sucralose, gellan gum, and natural flavor. The regular liquid coffee creamer contains nearly the same ingredients with sugar instead of sucralose and slightly less salt.

Sucralose is an artificial sweetener made from a chemical process that tweaks sugar to form a calorie-free sweetener that is 600 times sweeter than sugar, explains Jim White, R.D., registered dietitian and owner of Jim White Fitness and Nutrition Studios. It’s an FDA-approved sweetener that can be beneficial as a tool for weight loss if accompanied by a healthy dietary pattern, he adds.

It’s important to note that there is some controversial research surrounding artificial sweeteners. “There are studies that raise concern, especially if you are in a high‑risk category such as pregnant and lactating women, diabetics, those with migraines, epilepsy patients, and children,” White says. “There is limited data to support these concerns, but they should still be considered until further research is done.”

But other research has found sucralose to be a completely fine alternative to sugar in moderation. “Sucralose has been found by scientific study after scientific study to be safe for consumption,” says Keri Gans, M.S., R.D.N., C.D.N., nutrition consultant and author of The Small Change Diet. Ultimately, it is up to you to determine what you’re comfortable with when it comes to artificial sweeteners.

The creamers’ new formula cuts down significantly on both calories and sugars, dropping 20 calories and six grams of sugar per tablespoon. “The addition of the sucralose and the nonfat milk is what helps to lower the calories,” Gans explains.

And though just 20 calories less per serving isn’t a significant caloric difference, the six grams of sugar dropped from the nutrition label can have a major impact on your day. The American Heart Association recommends capping daily sugar intake at 24 grams. If you consume two tablespoons of the regular creamer, you’re already reaching half of your recommended daily cap, explains Wesley Delbridge, R.D., a registered dietitian and director of food and nutrition at Chandler Unified School District. And though there’s no inherent problem with sugar for an otherwise healthy person, he notes that there isn’t any nutritional value to the sweet stuff, so cutting down on those calories and grams of sugar can be a healthy choice.

Are the Zero Creamers healthy?

Overall, experts agree that Zero Creamers can be a great alternative to regular sweetened cream in your morning coffee if you’re concerned about your calorie count or sugar consumption.

White notes that the options are not necessarily “healthy,” because other than the sugar substitute used, the ingredients are ultimately the same. This means that the heavy cream, buttermilk, and oils are still bringing a lot of added fats to your morning cup.

But, how healthy the creamers are is dependant upon how much creamer you usually like to use in your coffee. A splash of a regular creamer isn’t going to do most people much harm, but if you’re using multiple tablespoons in multiple cups of coffee a day, Gans says this is a great option.

“If someone enjoys a lot of creamer in their coffee, especially flavored, and has more than one cup a day, this could be a good option because with a regular creamer the calories can add up,” Gans says.

Delbridge agrees that if you’re looking for a sugar-free option, this is a great pick. “On the whole, I think the creamer that Starbucks has introduced is definitely a healthy way to enjoy coffee,” he says. “It’s a great option. People, in general, should be paying attention to what they’re putting in their coffee.”

Delbridge adds that if you’re drastically cutting down on your calories and sugars throughout the day by switching to a sugar-free coffee drink, be aware not to consume those calories and sugars in other foods, as this can be a common downfall. And, if you’re looking for other healthier options to add into your morning coffee, Delbridge says adding agave as a sweetener, cinnamon or cocoa straight to your grounds before brewing, or a touch of vanilla extract to your cup for a sugar-free flavor punch can be great options as well.
