Can I call someone and go straight to voicemail?

Some mobile operators allow their subscribers to send voicemail directly without calling the other party’s line. This is generally only available when both parties are on the same provider, but it is super easy when available.

AT&T

To send a voicemail directly to another AT&T subscriber:

1. Enter your voice mailbox, and from the main menu, press 2.
2. Enter the 10 digits phone number to which you want to send your message.
3. Record your message and press the # sign. (To replay your message before sending it, press 1).
4. To select a particular delivery option, press 1. Unique delivery options are:
   • 2 for urgent.
   • 3 for private.
5. Press the # sign to send your message.

Verizon

To send a voicemail directly to another Verizon subscriber:

1. Call your voicemail access number.
2. Press “2” to send a message.
3. Follow the instructions as prompted. You record the message and then enter its phone number, or vice versa.
4. Set your delivery options: 1 for private, 2 for urgent, 3 for conformation, and 4 for future delivery.
5. Press “#” to send the message.

T-Mobile

To send a voicemail directly to another T-Mobile subscriber:

1. Call 1-805-637-7243.
2. Log in to your voicemail account.
3. Select the option to send a message and follow the instructions.

Sprint

To send a voicemail directly to another Sprint subscriber:

1. Call your own voicemail number and log in.
2. Select the option to send a message and follow the instructions.

What if I am not on the same provider/network as them?

If you are not on the same network as the person you want to call, the next best option is to use an app. There are two popular apps to run this service: Slydial and WhatCall. Although Slydial was the market leader, it has since been inundated with bad reviews because the service only works occasionally. WhatCall continued to work for a while, but also seems to have major issues from January 2021 and only works sporadically.

Slydial

Slydial is an app (available for iOS and Android) that you download and install on your phone. Free accounts are available, but you must listen to an ad before calling. There are also two tiers of paid accounts, giving you ad-free access, the ability to ‘Slydial’ multiple people at once and other premium features. For most people, the free version is perfect for quitting work, avoiding the semi-girlfriend, or not going to a party you don’t want to attend.

Here is how to use the service:

1. Download and install Slydial on your phone.
2. Sign up for an account and log in to the app.
3. Choose 267-SLYDIAL from your phone app on your mobile phone to connect to the service.
4. When prompted, enter the mobile number you are trying to reach.
5. Leave your message as indicated.

Slydial only works if you have a mobile phone. Even if the landline you are trying to call has digital voicemail, the app will not work. Otherwise, the process will automatically bypass the live line and go straight to voicemail.

WhatCall

WhatCall is also available for Android (sideload only) and iOS. The app will similarly send a phone call to someone else’s voicemail without them phone dial. However, as of January 2021, reviewers share the same concerns with SlyDial – it just sometimes works. WhatCall imports all of your contacts, so you just have to open the app and tap on a contact. From there you will be connected directly to their voicemail. WhatCall is a mobile only app that costs $ 0.99 on the iOS App Store.

How to Call Directly to Voicemail

What if you’re on the other side of things? Your phone rings, you see who’s calling and wish you could send them straight to your beautiful, customized voicemail message. This can be easily accomplished through your phone to airplane mode or turn on Do not disturb. In addition, you can reject incoming calls and send them directly to your voicemail. To automatically route a specific caller to your voicemail without your phone ringing, you have to use a different method depending on which one phone you’re using.

Using an Android

(Note: This only works on some Android builds.)

1. Navigate to your call list and add the number you want to avoid as a contact.
2. Navigate to “Contacts” and tap the three dot menu icon.
3. In the individual contact, tap the three-dot menu icon.
4. Select ‘Route to Voicemail’.

Using an iPhone

Unfortunately, you can’t currently send individual calls to voicemail on an iPhone without using a non-native app.

If you want to avoid marketing calls, you can just block them. This won’t stop that first call but will stop subsequent calls.

1. Open the phone app and go to Recent
2. Find the telemarketer call.
3. Select the information icon on the right, scroll down and tap Block this caller.
4. Calls from that number will be blocked in the future.

Calls are still technically delivered to you phone, but your phone will not alert you to the call. This is a handset lock and not a network lock. You can put a network block on stubborn telemarketers, but you’ll need to contact your network provider. To view voicemails for blocked calls, go to Voicemail, scroll all the way to the bottom and tap ‘Blocked Messages’.

How can you make a call and go straight to voicemail?

Forget about hassle with apps. There is a powerful voicemail processing system built into almost every major carrier today – and that system almost always includes a system for recording a voice message and sending it right away without calling the target phone. I’ll walk you through the process of doing this on Straight Talk (since that happens to be my provider), but most providers will have similar systems.

1. Dial the access number for voicemail; for Straight Talk, that’s * 86.
2. Enter the PIN that gives access to your voicemail.
3. Press 2 to send a message.
4. Enter the destination number and hash.
5. Record the message.
6. Press # to send the message.

The benefits of calling direct to voicemail are many. You can pass on bad news, deliver a message with full inflection and meaning in your voice, and give the recipient time to think before they have to respond. In some fraught situations, that period of reflection can completely change how a person reacts and turn a difficult situation into something much calmer and more measured.
