You’ve decided to change the Google account you use on your Android device. Wiping the device isn’t necessary, though your contacts may not follow along for the ride. If that happens, what do you do?

You migrate your contacts with the help of the Google Contacts import/export tool. It’s actually quite simple and isn’t relegated to you importing/exporting contacts of your Google accounts. In fact, you can use this to share contacts with other users (or import your Google work contacts into your Google personal account).

How to export and import your contacts

While this task can be done from within the Google Contacts app, it’s much easier to manage from the Google Contacts page. (Note: Exporting and importing isn’t supported by the new Contacts page yet.) Once you’re on that page, do the following.

  1. Log into the source account.
  2. Click the More drop-down.
  3. Click Export.
  4. From the resulting window (Figure A), select All Contacts (unless you want to select a particular Group) and Google CSV format.
  5. Click Export.
  6. Save the file to your local storage.

Log out of the source account and log into the destination account. You’ll follow the same process except select Import from the More drop-down. Then click the Choose File button, navigate to the file you just saved, and click Import.

Now you can add the new Google account to your device, remove the old account, and wait for your contacts to sync to the phone.

Once you have put together a useful contact list in Gmail, you might need to move that list to another account. Without using an automated method, you'd need to enter each contact manually, which could be very time-consuming depending on how many contacts you have. Whether you create a new email account or you have workers who need your contact list, you can export and then import some or all of your contacts from one Gmail account to another. Transferring these contacts usually doesn't take more than a few minutes, and you can even reuse the exported contact list later if you want.

Exporting

  1. Access the Gmail account that has the contacts you want to synchronize.

  2. Click the "Gmail" drop-down menu on the left side of the window.

  3. Click "Contacts."

  4. Click the "More" drop-down menu; then click the "Export" option.

  5. Select the group you want to synchronize or choose "All contacts." The former gives you a drop-down menu with a list of all your contact groups; the latter will export every contact you have.

  6. Click the "Google CSV" option if it's not selected already.

  7. Click "Export"; then navigate to the location on your computer where you want to save your contacts. You can save the contacts file anywhere, and after you import it to the other Gmail account, you can delete the file if you prefer.

  8. Click "Save."

Importing

  1. Access the second Gmail account.

  2. Click the "Gmail" drop-down menu on the left side of the window.

  3. Click "Contacts."

  4. Click the "More" drop-down menu; then click the "Import" option.

  5. Click "Choose File" and then navigate to the file you just exported in the window that opens.

  6. Click "Open," then click "Import."
