Is Marvel’s Spider-Man 2 coming to PS4? Insomniac Games lifted the wraps off the sequel to its 2018 superhero title at PlayStation Showcase 2021, and suffice to say, it’s looking amazing. We know that the game is coming to PS5 in 2023, but folk are understandably curious if there’s a PS4 version planned too.

Sony and Insomniac Games has confirmed that Marvel’s Spider-Man 2 is a PS5-exclusive, and will not be coming to PS4. Considering the game is out in 2023, it makes sense that it wouldn’t be a cross-generation release, as developers will eventually transition away to producing games only for PS5.

What Is Spider-Man 2?

Marvel’s Spider-Man 2 is the sequel to 2018’s Marvel’s Spider-Man and its standalone follow-up, Marvel’s Spider-Man: Miles Morales. The game sees Peter Parker and Morales returning for more web-slinging antics, and appear to be teaming up to take down Venom.

Spider-Man (2018), and 2020's Miles Morales (one of the selling points of the PS5) are, we think, some of the strongest superhero titles to grace consoles in recent years. Insomniac Games did a fantastic job with them, and we can't wait for the official (numbered, full-length) sequel.

The villain this time will be Venom, and the heroes will of course be Peter Parker and Miles Morales (the latter hopefully having a solid part after his spin-off). While we don't know a lot about the game at the time of writing, things might soon change.

A page for Spider-Man 2 was added to the PlayStation Store on Sunday, and Insomniac’s community director James Stevenson randomly shared a Spider-Man 2 GIF on December the 10th. So things might be in motion! For now, though, we'll share everything we know about the upcoming web-slinging title.

Spider-Man 2 game PS5 release date

The Spider-Man 2 PS5 game release date will take place in 2023, but Insomniac Games and Sony are yet to offer a more precise estimate.

If we had to start a rumour right here, we would predict that the Spider-Man 2 game will release in the fourth quarter of that year, somewhere in the window from September to December 2023.

That autumn/winter window is always a popular time for video game releases, so we're pretty confident in that guess. When a date gets confirmed, though, we'll update this page to let you know.

We've heard reports that game can now be added to your wish list on the UK PlayStation Store. However, we can't see a live webpage on the plain-old internet. Either way, you're a bit too soon to place a proper pre-order. Sorry! If anything changes, we'll update you right here.

What consoles will Spider-Man 2 release on?

The Spider-Man 2 game from Insomniac is due to launch exclusively on PS5 - there is no PS4 release for this one, which may come as something of a surprise after the Miles Morales game spanned both generations. If that situation changes at all, we'll be sure to update this page and let you know.

Spider-Man 2 PS5 game plot

Information is thin on the ground so far, but we do know that Venom (voiced by the Candyman himself, Tony Todd), will be featuring in the game which leads us to believe that he will be the primary villain for this second story in the mainline franchise - let's just hope that Green Goblin and Sandman aren't in the mix, too, and here's hoping that Peter Parker doesn't do any random dancing in the street.

Both Peter and Miles Morales look set to be present in the game, suited up in their Spidey outfits, which makes sense - both of them are set up enough in the universe now, so sharing the spotlight is logical - but that is all we know at the time of writing. But still, even that small morsel of information is enough to get us hyped for it.

We also have a good idea of at least one other familiar face that will be showing up and we got that from a voice - a voice in the trailer that sounded very much like it could belong to Kraven the Hunter, a Russian big game hunter from the comics who often preys on Spidey. You might remember him from Spider-Man: Shattered Dimensions if you're a recurring player of Spidey games.

What is the Spider-Man 2 PS5 gameplay like?

Nothing has been said on this yet but don't expect too much of a change-up from the last game and the Miles expansion. So we will have our open-world setting back, complete with all the side missions and interesting people to meet and interact with. We'd also expect a wealth of collectables to find as you make your way around.

The last game had enemy hideouts that you could take on and research tasks to complete on the side, and we expect similar things to be in this one too. That being said, we would hope to see some new types of gameplay when the game rolls around in 2023. We look forward to find out what they are.

Will the Spider-Man 2 PS5 game have co-op?

One thing we know for sure is that the Spider-Man PS5 game will not include co-op gameplay, with Sony's official PlayStation Blog stating that this new game will "continue the journey of both Peter Parker and Miles Morales in their most epic single-player adventure yet."

The use of the term 'single-player' there seems to rule out any chance of you playing as Pete while a multiplayer mate controls Miles. Both previous games in this franchise were solo affairs, though, so this isn't a massive surprise.

There is indeed a Spider-Man 2 trailer and this is the one that came as a thrilling surprise to all of us at the PlayStation Showcase event in September 2021. There may not be a huge amount in the trailer, but it is enough to make us wish away 2022 so we can get to play it. Check out the trailer for yourself below.
