The four knights of the apocalypse anime

Things are starting to heat up in the Seven Deadly Sins sequel series, Four Knights of the Apocalypse. Not only have each of the four knights been formally introduced into the story, but Meliodas has finally made his first appearance in the series since it began more than a year ago. With King Arthur's evil turn and ultimate ambitions still somewhat of a mystery, the land of Britannia needs saving more than ever before.

The Four Knights of the Apocalypse stars its own cast of heroes rather than the Seven Deadly Sins. They are each incredibly strong and might even have power greater than their predecessors considering only they are said to be strong enough to beat Arthur and Merlyn. While most of their powers and abilities are still rather a mystery, now that they've all been fully revealed there has still been enough revealed to get a basic understanding as to who they are and what they are capable of.

Percival - Knight of Death

Seven Deadly Percival

The main character of the series, Percival, is somehow the character readers have seen the most but know the least about. Raised by his grandfather Varghese on an isolated mountaintop known as God's Finger, Percival has been trained in survival and combat since he was a baby, and as such he is incredibly skilled in both. Even without those skills, his body is unnaturally strong and durable, able to fight against opponents more powerful than himself and take direct attacks from high ranking Holy Knights.

On top of all that, Percival also has a rare "Hero-type" magic known as "Hope" that has proven itself multiple times over. Hero-type magics are incredibly rare powers that harness the properties of multiple other types of magic at once, such as enhancing, summoning, and attacking. The only drawback to this power is that it is fueled by the hope Percival's allies have in him, so whenever that wavers, his powers do so proportionally.

Percival's "Hope" magic power is capable of creating an energy around Percival or a part of his body, enhancing his physical abilities as well as heal his wounds. He can also shape the energy however he wants into different shapes as well as create mini-Percival constructs that can be used in multiple ways. Most impressively, Percival can absorb other magics into his aura, which not only grants the aura of that magic's element but also lets Percival fire the attack back at his opponents. The most peculiar ability in his arsenal is that he can mummify people. He did so seemingly by accident when he was in a state of despair, believing his friends to all be dead. Even Goddess healing magic couldn't reverse this effect.

It is unclear why Varghese raised Percival in isolation the way he did, or why Ironside wasn't even aware that he had a son at all until he came to kill them both. Another mystery regarding Percival is how he is able to speak Demon language fluently without any real training. Why he's known as the Horseman of Death is also unknown, but it may have something to do with his mummification power. As the protagonist, it's obvious that all these questions will be answered eventually, but hopefully the answers are exciting and come sooner rather than later.

Lancelot - Knight of War

lancelot, seven deadly

One of the first characters introduced in the series, Lancelot, has proven to be one of the strongest characters in the series thus far. As the son of Elaine and Ban from Seven Deadly Sins, he has the genes of a fairy princess and Britannia's strongest human. This gives him the ability to transform into a small fox, as well as the ability to read the hearts of individuals, and possess incredible physical abilities.

This has made him an incredible covert operative for Meliodas, whom he serves directly. He's so skilled that he was even tasked with training Percival, even if he was doing so secretly and was paramount in getting him both to Liones and his current level of strength. Having been raised by his parents and trained under Jericho, Lancelot is incredibly skilled in combat, particularly in archery. The most devastating attack he has displayed so far is "Shining Road", an ability that fires a beam of light from his weaponry, homing in on his target at a high speed, obliterating them.

Even without that ability, he's a devastating combatant. Lancelot took on a squad of highly skilled Holy Knight assassins while being trapped in a "Perfect Cube" and managed to kill them all with barely any effort. With these abilities it's no wonder that he is considered to be the Horseman of War, and it's likely that the series has only scratched the tip of the iceberg in regard to his full potential.

Tristan - Knight of Pestilence

While not the first to appear in this series, Tristan was actually the first of the Knights to be introduced to the franchise at the very end of Seven Deadly Sins. Originally meant to be the protagonist of Four Knights of the Apocalypse, Tristan is the son of Meliodas and Elizabeth from the original series. As the son of a demon on par with the Demon Lord and a human with the soul of a Goddess, Tristan is one of the strongest beings in all of Britannia. With the abilities of a demon and a Goddess, he is a force to be reckoned with.

Tristan is a very skilled swordsman, favoring two blades in particular known as Mael and Estarossa. He uses them in conjunction with his goddess and demon powers, allowing him to channel both. He is able to create two pairs of Goddess wings that grant him flight, heal himself and others, perform the Goddess attack "Ark", and enter a demonic mode that increases the power of all his abilities. However, there is a limit to how long he can stay in that demonic mode, and he doesn't particularly like it either. As of now it's unclear why he was designated the Horseman of Pestilence, but the reason should be revealed soon enough.

Gawain - Knight of Famine

The final Knight of the Apocalypse and the last to be introduced, Gawain might just be the strangest member of the group. Not only is she the niece of King Arthur, she is the inheritor of Mael and Escanor's power, "Sunshine". As such, she has the potential to be the strongest member of her squad as well as possible way of saving King Arthur from this evil turn of his.

While she does have the strongest power in the series, Gawain is remarkably less skilled in using it than either Mael or Escanor. Her attacks are basic enough that Holy Knights with far less impressive abilities are able to beat her in combat thanks to their greater wisdom and experience. Gawain also seems to suffer from insecurities related to her being the best and strongest, which added to her lack of training and experience make her somewhat unreliable in combat.

She has the unmatched pride of Escanor but lacks the ability to back it up the way he always managed to. Much like with Tristan, there have been no reasons or hints given as to why her title is the Horseman of Famine, but all will eventually be revealed, hopefully quite soon.
