Alrighty. So I imagine everyone else is like me where their 2004 Dodge Ram is making a nouse like change rhythmically is jingling around in a tin can, then you go to the shop and the OEM is a little over $1,000 because they want to replace the whole balanced front driveshaft. If so, this part is for you!
I ordered the part and it is exactly as described. Here are a few important tips that I realized along the way.
1. You will be taking a balanced part off the truck, mark one of the 4 bolt ears with a scribe, maint marker or something you will see after handling this part. In the event, you forget or erase the marking, Mother Nature was kind enough to rust the shape on the matching part so you have a 50% chance of getting it right.
2. When you unbox and get this thing apart, take the new part and hand fit the loose part on the stub. This ensures you have the right one. The old one will be looser as it has been banging around for 200k + miles.
3. Clean the splines with WD40 and a rag, then retest the fit, you may need some WD40 and a 2x4 to hammer against.
4. Pick you poison to assemble completely outside of the truck and take a chance on the fit being tight at the spline and the bolt mounted end as you work your way around, the part will have some weight to it. I assembled it 100%, wrestled with it, disassembled the band and then installed it in 2 pieces, CV joint and the shaft.
5. When taking it apart, you won't see what you are doing, the stub that fits into the black gasket (which usually is the failing point) is about 2 inches long, about 1 inch in there is a c- ring that is usually rusted in with gink, Use the WS40 to clean the heck out of it, then shimmy it by shaking and wiggling it to work that clip in to a compressed state and the stub will pop off. I did not know what this looked like so I had to disassemble it in reverse, remove the bearings and components and use an angle grinder to carefully remove the old part. I found the recess to be corroded with Rust and Dirt. It may help to use a vice and tap the old one off downwards which I figured out afterward.
6. Use an old 2x4 and Hammer to persuade the part in if needed if you choose to assemble it in two parts. The metal cap is sturdy but not for a direct hammer blow.
7. Use all the Grease. DO NOT GREASE the spline areas, it creates an airtight fit where you can not displace the air.
8. Use Locktite blue on the bolts
9. When assembling the metal clamp, double the clip up by wrapping it twice before clamping. In the event you have to regrease it or disassemble to inspect or refit it, you can take it off with enough metal to grab and use a second time.
10. Ask a friend for help, your girlfriend (bless her heart) may drive you nuts even though her heart is in the right place.

Is it better to replace just the CV boot or the entire axle?

Many repair shops, though, will recommend replacing the entire axle if a boot is torn because there may be unseen damage to the CV joints, axle shafts and other parts that could result in other problems. Outer boots (the ones closest to a wheel) are more prone to tears than inner boots.

Can you replace a CV joint by yourself?

Replacing a CV joint yourself will save you a fair bit of money, but will require a decent amount of mechanical expertise and time. If you think the job is too complicated, it's recommended that you leave the task to a qualified technician. This can also help protect you from voiding any motor plan or warranty.
