Add or Change your Primary Doctor

It's important to have a primary doctor who can help you stay healthy and provide services when you are sick. With a primary doctor on file, Highmark Blue Cross Blue Shield of Western New York can accurately process your claims and help you get the care you deserve. Whether you are choosing a primary doctor for the first time or need to change your current one, it's easy to do.

Find primary care in 4 easy steps!

Login to your member account, then enter a provider name, specialty, or browse by category. You can also refine your search by location, distance, gender, and more. Your results will be displayed by distance, starting with the providers closest to you.

In the results, eligible Primary Doctors will be labeled as a PCP. If you're sure this is the doctor for you, click on “Select as Your PCP.”

Confirm your selection by clicking OK.  

If you have dependents, you can then choose whether to select this doctor as your own, or for a dependent. Subscribers can choose a primary doctor for dependents under 18-years-old.

How do Providers Become Part of Our Network?

Initial Credentialing

Providers can enroll in our health plan by completing the Universal Credentialing Application with CAQH, the Council for Affordable Quality Health Care.

How it Works:

Follow this link to access the Universal Provider DataSource

  • Under Providers, click 'Go to the Universal Provider Datasource' and login.
  • Enter your CAQH Provider ID (if you don't know it, call CAQH at 1-888-599-1771).
  • Enter or update your information.
  • Authorize Blue Cross Blue Shield WNY to access your information electronically.

Recredentialing

The CAQH Universal Credentialing Application is our data source for recredentialing.  As such, it is important that you keep your information on CAQH current. Update your CAQH application regularly with license(s), malpractice, demographic information, disclosure questions and attest to the accuracy of the information in the application.

Enumeration for Advanced Practice Providers (APPs)

Beginning January 1, 2022, Advanced Practice Providers (APPs) will no longer be required to be fully credentialed with us. As we affiliate with Highmark, APPs will be required to complete a simple online enumeration form within Highmark’s systems. Click here for additional information.
