Starting this week, Disney+ users in the U.K. will be able to watch five Spider-Man films from all three franchises on the streaming platform. Show Fans of the franchise will be able to have a binge-fest and relive the iconic Spider-Man portrayals from Tobey Maguire, Andrew Garfield and Tom Holland in Spider-Man, Spider-Man 2, The Amazing Spider-Man, The Amazing Spider-Man 2 and Homecoming on Disney+ starting on Friday. This is the beginning of a list of Sony’s film catalogue that will soon be joining the Disney+ platform. Just earlier this week, Spider-Man: No Way Home was announced to have a re-release in cinemas with a new extended version. According to Marvel, the success of the film has warranted a release of No Way Home: The More Fun Stuff Version, an extended film that will hit theaters starting on September 2 in the U.S. and Canada. The blockbuster No Way Home was a global hit, smashing box office records and making $1.9 billion USD around the world. The five Spider-Man films are making its way to Disney+ on June 17. In other entertainment news, Netflix has unveiled first-look images at Stranger Things Season 4, Volume 2. A young Peter Parker/Spider-Man (Tom Holland), who made his sensational debut in Captain America: Civil War, begins to navigate his newfound identity as the web-slinging super hero. Sadly, No Way Home isn't coming to Disney+ right now because Sony holds the rights to Spider-Man properties and not Disney. It doesn't mean that No Way Home won't end up on Disney+ in future, though. In April 2021, Sony struck a deal with Disney to bring its content, including Spider-Man movies, to Disney+. However, this only included movies released from 2022 onwards. But don't panic! From March 22, Spider-Man: No Way Home will be available on Amazon Prime Video, Vudu, Apple TV and Google Play Store. You can preorder the movie now for $20. It hasn't been confirmed if there will be the option to rent the movie in future. However, in the US, Spider-Man: No Way Home will be available to stream on Starz within the next six months, according to Starz CEO Jeffrey Hirsch. Is Spider-Man: No Way Home on Netflix?As far as we know, Spider-Man: No Way Home isn't coming to Netflix anytime soon. In April 2021, Sony Pictures signed an agreement with Netflix that would bring Sony's film franchises to Netflix US after they're shown in cinemas. That deal didn't kick in until 2022 so because No Way Home was released in 2021 it's probably not included. When Disney and Sony inked a content licensing deal in April 2021, we speculated that it all had to do with ensuring that Spider-Man titles can reach Disney Plus. The two studios announced the streaming deal about eight months before the Spider-Man: No Way Home premiere, which meant Disney was about to complete the MCU chronology on its streaming service. More than a year later, we’re finally starting to see the results of that deal. Spider-Man is coming to Disney Plus in select markets. But it’s not entirely good news. First new Spider-Man movies available on Disney PlusSpider-Man might be a Marvel creation, but Sony has the film rights to the superhero and many other connected characters. That’s why Marvel and Disney don’t have any of the MCU Spider-Man movies on the Disney Plus streaming service. You can’t watch Homecoming, Far From Home, or No Way Home on Disney Plus, despite the films being part of Marvel’s MCU. The streaming deal between Sony and Disney fixes that, but with a big caveat. Sony’s films will not hit Disney Plus immediately after their theatrical window closes. That’s what happens with Marvel Studios movies, which are available for streaming about 45 days after their theatrical premiere. Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness started streaming 47 days after its theatrical release.
With that in mind, you should know that not all Disney Plus markets will get access to every Spider-Man movie at the same time. And the Spider-Man projects coming to Disney Plus will start streaming well after their theatrical debut. Spider-Man in the UKDisney Plus UK surprised fans on in June by announcing the addition of several titles to the streaming service library. On June 17th, fans will be able to stream Spider-Man: Homecoming, the first standalone Spider-Man movie in the MCU. Also available on Disney Plus UK on June 17th were Spider-Man and Spider-Man 2 from Sam Raimi’s trilogy. Similarly, The Amazing Spider-Man 1 and 2 are also coming to Disney Plus UK. That is five Spider-Man films on Disney Plus UK, and the rest might be added in the near future.
That’s not all. Other titles from Sony Pictures’ Spider-Man Universe (SSU) will be available on the streaming service. Venom and Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse are coming to Disney Plus Japan and Disney Plus Italy, respectively. These movies might be made available for other regions too in the coming months, but there is no official confirmation as of now. We’ll have to keep our fingers crossed to see them released on Disney Plus in other regions. When is No Way Home streaming?As you can see, some Spider-Man titles are missing in action. Disney Plus UK isn’t getting Far From Home and No Way Home just yet. The same goes for Venom 2 and Raimi’s Spider-Man 3. And Morbius will need some time to hit the streaming service.
Also, there’s no telling when Disney Plus in the US will get the Spider-Man titles that will soon be available in the UK and other markets. Out of all these movies, No Way Home is the film Spider-Man fans are most desperate to stream online. However, it’ll be several months until it hits Disney Plus. The film is heading to other platforms, with Starz getting it first in the US. In some markets, Netflix and HBO Max will also start streaming No Way Home before Disney’s own streaming service. Sony doesn’t own its own streaming service. So, the Spider-Man movies are streamed across various streaming services instead of being exclusive to Disney Plus. If you can’t wait for the Spider movies to hit Disney Plus later, you would have to subscribe to other streaming services. Not to mention that Sony has announced a rerelease for No Way Homein the cinemas — an obvious attempt to cross $2 billion at the box office. The rerelease will contain some deleted scenes, thus making it longer than the original theatrical release. Fans can’t get enough of Tom Holland collaborating with other actors from the older Spider-Man movies. Therefore, Sony expects No Way Home to surpass $2 billion when it rereleases in September.
These are the terms that Disney and Marvel agreed on last year. Sony already had plenty of streaming deals in place that pre-date the Disney Plus deal. For example, all Sony’s movies in theaters this year will be streamed on Netflix. As such, Disney Plus subscribers will have to keep waiting for the full suite of MCU Spider-Man adventures.
